The GAA Games Development and Research Department has recently developed the 5 Star Centre initiative for primary schools.
The GAA 5 Star initiative aims to support and recognise Primary Schools that provide pupils with 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous Gaelic Games activity per week in a manner that ensures the children will experience fun, friendship, fairness and ultimately improve their fitness.

Coaches / Officers,
Enclosed find details of the upcoming Mayo GAA Martin Fogarty Hurling Coaching Workshop which will take place on Tuesday 12th December from 7.30pm until 9.00pm in The Breaffy Indoor Sports Arena. The Mayo U16 Hurling Development Panel will be coached during the Workshop on the night, as National Coaching Director Martin Fogarty delivers his Workshop on ‘Games Based Approach to Hurling Coaching’.
All coaches from Mayo GAA hurling/camogie from clubs/schools are invited to attend, and pick up coaching hints which they can use within their own sessions. These workshops have proven most valuable in the past, as they have created a direct link to underage hurling coaching practices in the more traditional hurling counties.
I would be grateful if you can promote this initiative within your club. With Feile na nGael being hosted in Connacht in 2018, this is an ideal opportunity for your Feile coaching panel to receive invaluable coaching tips for the year ahead. The Breaffy Arena has proven very popular as a venue for these workshops in the past. This is a free event and younger players are also invited to come along and watch proceedings. Please spread the word around your club/school.
For more information contact Mayo GAA Games Promotion Officer Adrian Hession on 087-2450566.
Kind Regards.
Adrian Hession

Feile na nGael 2018
The National U14 Hurling & Camogie Feile na nGael competition will be hosted by Connacht GAA on the weekend 10th June 2018. All hurling and camogie clubs in Connacht are invited to be part of this event. It is planned that Castlebar Mitchels Camogie Club will be a host club for Feile na nGael, and will have a visiting team staying within the club for the weekend festival of hurling.
In preparation for this, the Castlebar Mitchels Camogie Club are looking to recruit new players for 2018 who wish to be part of this momentous National event. It is expected that over 120 hurling teams and over 60 camogie teams will take part in Feile na nGael all over Connacht, in what is the largest underage GAA event on the calendar.
Players born in 2004, 2005 and 2006 are our target audience, and we welcome all four schools within our catchment area to today’s event. We thank all teachers for your promotion of hurling and camogie within your school thus far and look forward to working with you in the future. We hope you enjoy todays event.
For further information on joining for Feile na nGael contact Castlebar Mitchel’s Camogie Coach Mary Kennedy on 087-9018855.
Castlebar Mitchels Host Eugene O’Shea Schools’ Club Tournament
The Breaffy Sports Arena was the venue for the inaugural Eugene O’Shea Memorial Hurling Tournament for hurling school in the Castlebar Mitchels Hurling catchment area. Four schools took part on the day with over sixty boys taking part in the unique indoor hurling event.
In the end it was the St Pats Boys National School team who emerged on top with a win over Scoil Raifteiri in the final. In the Shield final, newcomers Derrywash NS came out on top with a win over Snugboro NS.
Tony Stakelum (Castlebar Mitchels Hurling Chairman) congratulated all four teams involved and thanked the teachers for their support of the event. He also thanked referee Conall O’Donnaill and local schools coordinator Kevin O’Boyle for his work in launching the blitz day. Due to the success of the event, it is hoped that the Eugene O’Shea Memorial Cup will be an annual event in the Castlebar Mitchels coaching calendar.
