Pearse Stadium Exhibition Game: Report

Cumann na mBunscol Exhibition | Pearse Stadium | May 19th, 2013

20 children from schools all around Mayo participated in Sunday’s Cumann na mBunscol Exhibition in Pearse Stadium, Galway.

The children met Cumann na mBunscol representatives at the Áras before being presented with their full Mayo kits and taking their seats in the Pearse Stadium Stand.

The first task was to welcome the Mayo and Galway senior teams onto the field of play. An unexpected highlight of the day came when Mayo Manager, James Horan, took a few minutes to greet the young players from both Galway and Mayo. No doubt he was sizing up a few stars of the future! This was a lovely touch from James, and made the occasion all the more special for the children.

While the main event of the day proved to be something of a let down (although not from a Mayo perspective!), the half-time exhibition game played by the children of Mayo and Galway was anything but.

The patrons were treated to a fine exhibition of all that is good about football. We saw beautiful scores, pin-point passes and wonderful blocks, all while encompassing the “Give Respect, Get Respect” ideals. Click here for a full list of Mayo players.

We would like to thank the Connacht Council for allowing the children and their families this fantastic experience, the Mayo County Board for supplying the team kits, and above all else, the teachers and coaches throughout Mayo for their continued dedication to the promotion of our games.

We would also like to thank our counterparts in Cumann na mBunscol Gaillimh, Cyril Mannion and his colleagues for looking after us so well during the day.

Cumann na mBunscol Football Semi Finals

MAYO_1small

Hi all, we have 2 outstanding quarter finals and 13 semi’s going ahead on Wednesday, please note not all semis are ready, the remaining semis will be the following Wednesday as some areas are just not finished yet, we have had a back log with the mini sevens being late this year, and various other things, I hope to avoid this next year. The timetable is packed and Wednesday will be hectic enough so please be on time and be patient!

Best of luck to everyone!

Download Semi Final Fixtures here: County Semi finals 2013

Obviously some schools have an early start, please try to arrive at least 20 minutes before throw in to allow time to tog out and warm up etc, you can literally be 5 minutes walking from place to place and finding where you are.

Time is tight with so many games and if you are way behind time you will put everyone out, if a school does not turn up in time they could forfeit the game. You will see that there are 15 games to be played.

Exhibition Game – Pearse Stadium May 19th

INTO/Cumann na mBunscol Football Mini 7s Finals – Report

Castlebar, Wednesday May 1st

Congratulations to Ballyvary girls and Breaffy boys. Well done!

The first girls semi final was Currabaggan v Charlestown.
Charlestown had lost almost all of last year’s great team but fought bravely to retain their title. It wasn’t to be as the Knockmore girls eventually wore them down and booked their place in the final.

The next semi final was a ding-dong battle between Logboy / Irishtown and Ballyvary, the game moved from end to end throughout, with Ballyvary getting a goal and a point at the very end to win by 4 points.

The first boys semi was between Breaffy, Ballina and Carracastle / Dernabroc, with the town boys proving too strong for the amalgamated schools.

The other semi was an end-to-end tight affair with Tuar Mhic Éadaigh eventually pulling ahead of a gallant Newport team.

The Girls final was a dogged battle for most of the first half with just a point in it, as Currabaggan missed several crucial chances, Ballyvary eventually made their strength tell and two goals before half time and one immediately after set them on their way and Currabaggan could not make a comeback. Ballyvary emerged as champions on a 3 – 5 to 0 – 1 scoreline.

The Boys final proved to be a closer tougher game with Breaffy holding a slight lead for most of the match, as the game ebbed and flowed Breaffy gradually built on their lead but were never out of sight as both teams exchanged scores. The Ardnaree boys eventually overcame the Gaeltacht lads on a score of 3 – 7 to 1 – 7.

Thanks to the local media who covered the games and our great photographer, Frank Dolan. Thanks to our match referees Seán Mac Éil and Martin Corcoran.
Thanks to Phil Heneghan who looks after McHale Park and dressing rooms for all his help.

We would like to thank the County Board for the facilities.

Lastly and most importantly, to Eugene Lavin and his team for setting up the pitches and goalposts and having everything in place for us.

Congratulations to all the teams and their mentors for getting so far in the competition and thanks to all the local areas who have played earlier in the year to get us to the county stages.

All teams who qualified for quarter finals in this year’s competition are reminded to contact James Feeney re Exhibition Match on May 19th.
